Sumo Polaris (I) is the first in a series of planned exploratory cores drilled through the thick ice of the Arctic Ocean by the German research icebreaker Polarstern. The core was drilled during the MOSAiC (Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate) expedition in January 2021, with a depth of approximately 1,130 meters (3,700 feet). The core provides unique insights into the Arctic climate system, spanning over 400,000 years. It contains important climate archives, including sediments, volcanic ash layers, biogenic material, and ice. Researchers can extract and analyze air bubbles trapped in the ice, providing a detailed understanding of past atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases such as CO2 and methane, and dust concentration as well as abundances of isotopes. These records offer clues about past climate variability, especially how the Arctic region has responded to natural and anthropogenic warming. The Sumo Polaris (I) core has the potential to strengthen our understanding of current and future Arctic change, such as sea ice retreat, permafrost thaw, and coastal erosion compared to previous intervals of Earth's history. The core is also expected to advance scientific knowledge by providing a better understanding of the Arctic in the context of global climate change, which could have broad-ranging implications for both the Earth's system and society.
